Speaking words of life are so important and beneficial to your life. As a life coach, I like to tell others that speaking is what can change every aspect of your life. As many point out, God started the world with his words. He “SAID” let there be light and poof there was light! It’s literally that easy (right?). However, it still seems like we aren’t taking our words seriously. We as people are speaking whatever, whenever, and we wonder why our lives aren’t as we want them. No longer do we need to do that. We should start taking control of our speaking and we will see how we can change the world for the better.
As Proverbs 18:21 states, The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. In this blog post, I want to examine this verse and break it down to its simplest form. I’m doing this to show people how important this verse is and how it can truly transform every aspect of one’s life.
We have to take control of our words. We have to take responsibility for what we speak. People may think it’s crazy to truly speak every word with precise purpose, but if we did, what would happen?
Here’s what could happen: Imagine a world where people only spoke the truth, and spoke it in a way that resulted in the purposes of God. Imagine how awesome the world would be. We wouldn’t have gossip magazines, we wouldn’t have to figure out what news is real or not, we wouldn’t have to second guess what people have told us. We could trust and keep moving. I feel like we need to get to that point more. I know as humans, we aren’t perfect; but we should try and hold a certain standard, and not allow words to control us, but we control the words.
So, to break down Proverbs 18:21. I want to start with the two words “the tongue”. As you take a simple glance at this, we can assume that the tongue means the tongue in your mouth. The tongue as an organ is responsible for so many things. It has thousands of taste buds that are used to send singles to the brain when something enters our mouth. It helps detect and transmit taste signals to the brain. The tongue is also vital to our ability to eat. Since it’s movable, it helps us suck, turn food mashable so we can swallow it, and the senses tell us if it’s good or bad for us.
The tongue also helps us speak. Did you know the tongue is so agile that it helps us produce up to 90 words per minute! The tongue works with the lips and teeth so it can produce sounds from the throat. Lastly, the tongue helps defend germs from coming into our mouth!
The tongue has so many important functions. It is a vital organ in our body. It controls two things that we need to thrive in the world – food and speech.
Can you see how important the tongue is!?!
Now, I want to move on to the phrase: “the power”. The word “power” has many definitions, but this one really stood to me (from the Merriam-Webster dictionary): “possession of control, authority, or influence over others.” Keep reading… it will come together… I promise 😊.
Let’s move on to “life and death”:
Life is defined as (from the Merriam-Webster dictionary): “the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body.”
Death is defined as (from the Merriam-Webster dictionary): “the end of life.”
So, let’s recap what we have so far: One of the most vital organs in our body has the possession of control, authority, or influence over the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body and the end of life. WHOA!
Let’s keep going….
We will start with “and those who love it”. “those who” basically means, people. Us. The human race. I want to now focus on the word “love”. Love is one of the first feelings/emotions we experience. But, how does Merriam-Webster define it? Here’s one definition of it: “warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion”. (I love it lol).
Now the word “it”. What does the word “it” mean in this verse? This it is referring to the tongue’s action and role it has in the power of life and death. Meaning, if you have an enthusiasm or devotion for knowing that the tongue has the power of life and death. You will then, eat of its fruit.
“Eating of it’s fruit” is a term or phrase that isn’t to be taken completely literal. It doesn’t mean you’re going to be eating a literal apple or orange. What this means is that if you are one to love having the power of life and death and understand what power you have, you will experience the benefits of how you use that power.
For example, if you love to speak death, you will experience the effects of speaking death. I will tell you, speaking death will only bring death, negativity, hate, judgement, etc. to you. However, if you love to speak life which can be translated to speaking love, joy, peace, and positivity; you will then live a life of love, joy, peace, and positivity.
I hope you’re still with me! So, let’s take a look at the full verse again: Proverbs 18:21, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit”.
We can break it down to this phrase to help us live an amazing life:
“One of the most vital organs in our body has the possession of control, authority, or influence over the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body and the end of life and if we, as the human race, bring devotion or enthusiasm to knowing that we have the power to speak life or death, we will reap the benefits of speaking life or of speaking death.”
We have the power in our mouth to change the world. We just have to take the ownership that our words mean something. Once we understand that, we will only speak uplifting, encouraging, and powerful words to everyone – strangers, friends, family, enemies, etc. My piece of advice is to think before you speak. Before you decide to say something to someone, decide if your words will bring life or death.
