Three Steps to Finding your Joy!

I love the word JOY! It’s a word that literally describes something that we ALL want and need. At times joy can be more valuable than money! If you have joy, life is good. If you don’t have it, life can be pretty hard. Stop and think, do you have joy? If not, why don’t you? What’s stopping you?

Not sure… well good thing you’re reading this blog post! I want to teach you three steps you can take to find joy in your life. Let’s goooo!

The first step to finding joy is by evaluating what’s keeping joy from you. What in your life is causing you to not feel joyful? Is it your relationships, your job, your career, where you live…? It’s time to assess those areas of your life. Take some time to sit and write down these main categories: Family, Friendships, Career/Job, Location. Under each category, begin to write out anything within that category that’s causing you more pain than joy.

The second step is to remove the painful things you wrote under each category out from your life. Did you just feel a sense of panic when you read that? Here’s the thing, what do you want out of life? Do you want to have joy or do you want to have pain? As a life coach, I find that many tolerate painful things that, to them, seem small. However, when we take a closer look at it, it’s actually causing them a lot of pain and keeping them from a joyful life. If you don’t remove the things that are hurting you, they will always be there.

Here’s an example: Let’s say you have a pebble rock in your FAVORITE pair of expensive designer shoes. The rock is just a pebble and small, but it hurts the bottom of your foot anytime you put on your FAVORITE pair of shoes. That pebble rock is NOT supposed be a part of your shoes. At first, you’re able to handle the feeling of that rock. However, you’re wearing your FAVORITE pair of shoes every day, and now that small pebble rock is really starting to affect you. Anytime you put on your favorite pair of shoes, you feel that rock. Soon, it’s causing you to limp, because you’re trying to walk and not feel that rock! Before you know it, the rock causing you to stop wearing your favorite pair of shoes! That small rock is preventing you from wearing something that you LOVE and spent a lot of MONEY on. What can you do to stop that rock from causing you pain? REMOVE IT! It’s simple! Once you removed the rock, you can wear your shoes pain free! Your limp goes away! As a result, you fall back in love with those shoes.

Now that example may be a little extreme, but if you couldn’t tell… the shoes are a metaphor for your life. If you keep those “rocks” in your life, you won’t be able to have a joyful life. Life is meant to be joyful!! Remove those “rocks”, so you can fall back in love with yourself!  

The third step to finding your joy is God/Jesus/Holy Spirit. If you’ve read any of my other blogs, you know my love for God/Jesus/Holy Spirit! He’s the third step, because you’re going to need him when you’re removing things from your life that are hurting your joy. He’s someone to lean on and trust when the world starts questioning why you began the journey of finding your joy. Pray and trust that God/Jesus/Holy Spirit will get you through the transition period of finding your joy. John 16:24 ESV says, Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” In this verse, Jesus is saying, ask him for things in his name, so that they will come to pass and you can have joy. Ask him to help you remove the un-joyful things out of your life! Ask him to help you find more joy if you aren’t sure what will bring you joy! Then trust and believe that it will come…. Because it will. 😊
